_One time my dad accidentally left food cooking on the stove. He forgot about it and we all went to bed. Later there was a loud noise in the house. The alarm was going off. There was a lot of smoke in the house. I remembered a firefighter who had come to my school. He had told us that if there was smoke, we should stay near the floor. My mom and dad and I got down on our hands and knees and crawled to the door. When we got outside, my mom called 9 1 1 and asked for help. Soon a fire engine came and many firefighters got out. They went inside and put out the fire with their hoses.

_Now that you've heard Johnathan's story, I want to ask you some questions. How did Johnathan and his family leave the house after they noticed the smoke? Did they run, walk, or crawl? Did Johnathan's mom call 9 1 1 before or after she left the house? Why do you think it might be a good idea to go outside before calling 9 1 1 when there's a fire? When you've thought about these questions, let's listen to the fun fire safety song at the bottom of the page! As you watch, think about these questions: Is it ever okay to play with matches? What is a smoke alarm for?
